A trademark in this country may be registered through one of the 2 available systems of trademark registration:

1. National trademarks may be registered through the State Trademark Office.
2. International trademarks may be registered through W.I.P.O. system.


Trademark Registration in Syria: Requirements and Procedure

Trademark registration requirements in Syria:

- Power of attorney notarized, the legalization is not mandatory. However in case it is legalized up to Syrian consulate abroad, then it will suffice all future work. Late filing of power is possible after payment of fees for each month; maximum period allowed is 6 months. 
 - Design of the trademark in JPEG format in case of a graphical trademark (not required for word mark).
- The details of goods and/or services for witch the trademark will be registered or the classes in case they are known. Multiclass applications are not allowed anymore.
- Details of the trademark owner (name, address, registration number).
- Invoicing details (name, address, fiscal number, registration number).
- Certified copy of priority document in case priority is to be claimed, should be filed within 3 months from the filing date.

Trademark registration procedure in Syria:

The trademark will be published in the Trademark Journal, The opposition can de filed within 90 days from the date of publication before the Committee. The committee decision is subject for appeal before the First Instant Court. The protection lasts 10 years but it is valid as of the filing date, and no payment of publication fees.

Other trademark procedures in Syria:

Trademark renewal in Syria: The renewal procedure may be done within 6 months before expiry, a grace period of 6 months may be offered after the payment of a penalty fee. For the trademark renewal we need the power of attorney notarized or in case it is legalized up to Syrian consulate abroad, then it will suffice all future work. Any renewal application will be subject to substantive examination. This will apply on the first time renewal application after the implementing of the new law; however, in case of any conflicting trademark appearing, the renewal will be rejected. Renewal application, for the first time after the new law implementation, will be subject for opposition after publication within 90 days. Renewal of multi-class registration as per the old law will be subject to full official fees for each class.
Trademark change in Syria: For the change of name or address we need the power of attorney notarized, the certificate of name/address duly legalized up to the Syrian Consulate and the late record will be subject to penalty fee every 2 months after the basic 3 months.
Trademark assignment in Syria: For the trademark assignment we need the power of attorney notarized, the deed of assignment duly legalized up to the Syrian Consulate. The late record will be subject to penalty every 2 months after the basic 3 months.
Trademark license in Syria: For the license we need the power of attorney notarized, the license agreement duly signed by both parties and legalized up to the Syrian Consulate. The license should be recorded within 3 months from the date of signature; otherwise a penalty of late record will be paid, every 2 months will be considered one period.
