Trademark Registration in Egypt: Requirements and Procedure

Trademark registration requirements in Egypt:

- Power of attorney legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
- Design of the trademark in JPEG format in case of a graphical trademark (not required for word mark).
- The detaliation of goods and/or services for witch the trademark will be registered or the classes in case they are known, one item must always be excluded from a class.
- Details of the trademark owner (name, address, registration number).
- Invoicing details (name, address, fiscal number, registration number).
- Information related to the previously filed by you trademarks, in order to benefit of the priority date, a certified copy of the priority document must be submitted within three months if it is the case. All documents must be available within three months from the filing date.

Trademark registration procedure in Egypt:

The registration procedure lasts 24 months from filing to registration. The opposition period is 3 months from publication in the Official Gazette. The protection lasts 10 years from the filing date.

Trademark renewal in Egypt: The renewal application within 12 months before expiry. For the renewal we need the legalized power of attorney up to the Egyptian Consulate.
Trademark changes in Egypt: For changing the name or the address we need the power of attorney duly legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate in the new name, the certificate of change of name/ address legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate.
Trademark assignments in Egypt: For the assignment we need the power of attorney legalized up to the Egyptian Consulate, the legalized deed of assignment including the transfer of the ownership of the establishment which products the goods for which the trademark is registered and the name, address, nationality, legal status and nature of business of the assignee.
Trademark License in Egypt: For the license we need the power of attorney legalized from both the proprietor and licensee, and the license agreement, with verified English translation legalized.
Trademark use in Egypt: When a registered mark has not been continuously used for 5 years, a cancellation action may be filed by a third party.
