Trade Marks Ordinance, 2001 (effective from 12 April 2004 and repealing the Trademarks Act 1940). This new law has brought a number of substantial changes to the trademark law of Pakistan. These changes include, among others: the introduction of registrability of service marks, introduction of registrability of collective marks, change of the term of registration to ten-year periods, registrability of three-dimensional marks, registrability of sound marks, introduction of possibility to file divisional applications, introduction of special protection for well-known marks and marks having a reputation in Pakistan and abolition of defensive marks, introduction of provisions on licensing to replace the registered user provisions, and abolition of the provisions on associated marks; under the new law it has become possible to claim priority for a trademark application.

International legislation
Pakistan is a part of WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) treaties, as fallows:- WIPO Convention, since January 1977.
- Paris Convention (Industrial Property), since July 2004.
As a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Pakistan is Member and Signatory to TRIPS Agreement, since January 1995.
Membership of other bodies/treaties: UCC, SAARC
- Member of UCC since April 1954.
- Member of SAARC since December 1985. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established when its Charter was formally adopted on December 8, 1985 by the Heads of State or Government of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
